Intentional Summer

It’s almost June 1st !!!
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer…

Our family is in count down mode with only two weeks of school left.
And for me, that means it’s time to get serious about summer planning.

I am a natural born planner.
I like it.
It helps me.
I find freedom in having a plan.
And without planning….I accomplish very little–
Because it’s so easy for me to respond to the most immediate instead of the most important.

That said–before I share some ideas for intentional summer planning
I want to preface this post with three thoughts:

First.  All planning must be proceeded with a big-in-bold-highlighted-and-underlined–

LORD WILLING

We’re just finishing up a study in James and these verses are always so convicting:

1Come now, you who say,  ”Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15Instead you ought to say,”If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16As it is, you boast in your arrogance.
All such boasting is evil.
~James 4: 13-16

Second.  Doug Wilson’s thoughts on time management are excellent.  He starts by saying:

The point is fruitfulness, not efficiency.
You should want to be fruitful like a tree, not efficient like a machine.

Third. I’ve shared before about the rats in my cellarYou know…those little, ugly guys that are always there, hiding in the dark.  Funny thing is, they’re rarely seen unless you throw the lights on quickly and catch them by surprise. I don’t always have the best response when plans get thwarted. So it’s important for me to always remember in my attempts at planning….that God’s plans are always best.  They are truly the plans I want. And sometimes the unexpected interruptions are actually the plan.

The great thing, if one can, is to stop regarding all the unpleasant things as interruptions of one’s “own,” or “real” life.
The truth is of course that what one calls the interruptions are precisely one’s real life —
the life God is sending one day by day.
— C.S. Lewis

So this is what my intentional summer planning process looks like…

First, I like to print out free blank calendars for the months of June, July, August, and September.
There are many stored-online-options that work well too and I’ve used those in the past, but I’m personally a hard-copy-have-it-in-my-hand type of person. So I actually do print them out on paper and jot in my notes.

Next, I take time to brainstorm my way through the following questions (not in any order of significance).
I try to keep my answers very practical and realistic so that I don’t get overwhelmed or discouraged.
I figure…actually reading 3 books all the way through…is a lot better than saying I’m going to read 20.
Again, this is just a brainstorm…
I’ll share my own brainstorm at the bottom of this post.

The questions to think through:

What places would we like to visit locally this summer?

What specific educational goals do we have for each child?

What 3 books (or more) would I like to read this summer?

How am I going to spend time in God’s Word?

What am I hoping to study in the Bible?

Are there any friendships we’d especially like to connect with this summer?

What household tasks do I need to keep up on?

Are we planning to take any extended trips or vacations?

What reoccurring weekly activities would we like to include?

Are there any specific skills we’d like our children to learn over the summer?

Are there any character traits or heart issues that we need to work on with our children?

Are there any specific skills I’d like to work on over the summer?

How can I make sure we have down time?

Are there any fun movies we’d like to watch together?

How/where will we celebrate any birthdays, holidays or special occasions?

What will hospitality look like for us this summer?  Is anyone coming to stay?

Does my husband have anything that is important to him to include?

Do we have any house project goals?

Do we have any other goals for the summer that I haven’t included elsewhere?

What will our kiddos’ summer chores include (now that they’ll have a bit more free time)?

What are some “fill-in” activities that we’d like to do more often (see below for examples)?

Are there any schedules I need to collect to keep with my summer calendars (examples below)?

Finally, using a pencil, I start writing the non-negotiables onto the calendars.  Then I also look for ways to include the optional activities, writing a small star next to them, so that I’ll remember them if we have time, but won’t feel any pressure that they are have-to-happen-commitments.
I also like to write reminders to myself at the top of each month of fill-in activities…things that we want to do more often, but that fall by the wayside at the mercy of time-wasters.
At the top of each month, I write the book I’d like to complete that month or any other monthly goals.

When I have our summer calendars mostly filled in, I run them by my husband and then make sure he has a copy of the latest version.

Here’s a shortened version of my own brainstorming, just to give you some ideas…

What places would we like to visit locally this summer? Any fun local activities?
The beach, Mt. St. Helens, Oaks Amusement Park, Portland Saturday market, digging for geodes, Starlight Parade, Portland Rose Festival, Bend, the state and county fairs, Lake Oswego Trolley, parks around the area–I loved this post about taking a local summer park tour.

What specific educational goals do we have for each child?
Have each child make a list of books they would like to read, aim for 60 minutes of reading every day, practice multiplication facts every day, read with mom 3 times a week, each older child read Lydia a book every day.

What 3 books (or more) would I like to read this summer?
Of course, my mental list is WAY longer than three…but my specific book goals are Kelly Minter’s The Fitting Room, Eric Metaxas’ Bonhoeffer, and to finish Tim Keller’s King’s Cross.
I also want to read back through all of Andree Seu’s essay collections because I pretty much am perpetually reading her writing. I’m also hoping to read The Ministry of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson with the Good Morning Girls.

How am I going to spend time in God’s Word?
For me this is really worth thinking about because there’s not as much schedule to the day in the summer, except before the kiddos wake up. So for me, I need to read in the morning before they get up or it probably won’t happen. Kinda the same as exercise….

What am I hoping to study in the Bible?
I’m considering Nancy Leigh Demoss’ Lies Women Believe and the Truth That Sets Them Free but I usually join a few friends for a summer-study-in-the-park each summer where the kids play and we go through something together and we haven’t made any decisions yet about this year.  I want to continue to read and reread through Romans in participation with The Romans Project.

Are there any friendships we’d especially like to connect with this summer?
Several came to mind…

What household tasks do I need to keep up on?
This is really tricky for me in the summer, but what helps me is to list out the basics for each week and then at the beginning of the week add them to the calendar, depending on what is planned for that particular week.  I’m talking about the basic basics like:  market shopping, laundry (that would be pretty much daily), cleaning., meal planning…

Are we planning to take any extended trips or vacations? When?
We always go on 2 different group camping trips during the summer…one to the coast and one up to the mountains.  This year we’re hoping to join some friends at Cannon Beach for a bit towards the end of the summer.  We’d also like to make it over to Bend, where my parents live.

What reoccurring weekly activities would we like to include?
Swimming times, bike riding times, time set aside to have friends over, Regal Cinemas $1 Summer Movies, trips to the library

Are there any specific skills we’d like our children to learn over the summer?
We’d like to use our Signing Time materials.  I’d also like to work with the kiddos on being able to do their own laundry.

Are there any specific character traits or heart issues that we need to focus on with our children?
For the sake of our kiddos’ privacy…I won’t list those here :)

Are there any specific skills I’d like to work on over the summer?
I need to do a better job keeping up with the garden and I’m also really interested in learning more sign language.  For me, just keeping up on exercise, cleaning, and time in God’s Word is going to be plenty to fill my plate!

How can I make sure we have down time?
This is where it’s important for us to look through the weekends and make sure we aren’t gone several weekends in a row….or that I’m not packing every day with so many fun options that we all end up exhausted.  There’s a whole lot to be said for time at home….where the kids come up with their own activities and have enough uninterrupted play time to really dig in and invest in their created adventures.

Are there any fun movies we’d like to watch together?
My husband really wants them to see The Sound of Music.

How/where will we celebrate any birthdays, holidays or special occasions?
We have Father’s Day, birthdays, 4th of July and then more birthdays.

What will hospitality look like for us this summer? Is anyone coming to stay?
This is an important place for us to communicate with family members and friends from out of town.  We also try to get together with our Home Bible Study at least once a month (during the school year we meet weekly, but in the summer take a break).  My husband I also try to discuss what couples or families from our local community we’d like to invite over.

Does my husband have anything that is important to him to include?
I haven’t had a chance to sit down with him and ask yet…I’m just now getting around to this brainstorm…BUT…I know he will say he wants to take the kiddos on kayak-with-dad-times.  He usually takes them individually throughout the spring and summer and I’m sure he’ll want to do that again.

Do we have any house project goals?
I have several spaces that I didn’t get to organize before our last garage sale.  I also need to get serious about the garden and I’m sure my guy will have some ideas to add to this one.

Do we have any other goals for the summer that I haven’t included elsewhere?
Our daughter’s language skills therapy for dyslexia will continue throughout the summer, but it’s pretty early in the morning (which is helpful when we have plans). Last summer we were able to find a college-aged friend to drive her twice a week for a small price and it made a huge difference to avoid rushing all the other little guys up and out of the house during the slow summer mornings.  I’d like to set that up again.

What will our kiddos’ summer chores include (now that they’ll have a bit more free time)?
Oh–I have big plans for this one :)

What are some “fill-in” activities that we’d like to do more often?
Puzzles, nature walks, water gun fights, more books, obstacle courses, tree-house-building

Are there any schedules I need to collect to keep with my summer calendars?
Library–activities and summer book reading program, Kids’ VBS schedules from churches, community event calendars, local parks and recreation activities

Yeah, be sure and leave some room for a few more “wars” They will probably be impromptu again… but I think it was a winner :)

And thanks again for sharing the video.

    Thanks Phyllis…
Becks–hope it’s okay…I’m going to link to your post. I love the photos. It was TOTALLY a winner!!! :)

I am exhausted just reading this! I love all the planning ideas – this is what I should be doing, so we don’t arrive at the end of August thinking “wish we had done that….”

    Thanks for the great ideas!!

“You should want to be fruitful like a tree, not efficient like a machine.” LOVE this!

Thanks Kara, what a great resource to help with summer planning – I’m always so excited for summer but then it flies by so fast and I’m not as proactive as I’d like to be…I loved the blank calendar idea – definitely have to try that. When do you fit in exercise? And how early do you get up (& go to bed)? Thanks for the great examples of fun things to plan for too!! xoxo

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/13182607074543277164 Kara

um…yeah Annie…it’s that whole sleep thing that gets me :)
Actually that is part of my goal list right now. Jas is working long hours still (60-70+ per week) but thankfully he can work from home. But we almost never are in bed before 11pm. Right now I’m getting up around 6:15…when I hear that lovely pre-made-coffee “beep”…but I have a pretty good sleep-in crew. They aren’t usually up until 8 on days that allow (our T/TH homeschool days..and on weekends they aren’t supposed to come out until 8…so it gives me a bit of time). But summer will be a transition as far as exercise…because right now I’m walking with special friends on M/W/F when they are in school. That’s why I definitely need a plan. I bought Gillian Michael’s “Hot Bod in a Box” because…you know…but so far it still has the plastic wrap on it :)

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/13182607074543277164 Kara

    Dear Aurie friend,

    Don’t be exhausted :)
You are one of my all-time-new-bloggy-friend-favorites and I know you are purposeful in your marriage and parenting and life in general.

If I didn’t know the Lord….I think I’d be a major rule breaker because lists and guidelines are mere “suggestions” to me. So–usually they don’t overwhelm me. I pick and choose what feels helpful and move on…

But I am thankful–God gave me a recent season of over-whelmed-ness (see my “Do The Next Right Thing Post” for that) because I think He wanted me to see the “other side” where ideas don’t energize…they make ya feel completely overwhelmed.

I’m still trying to sort out the balance…between being purposeful…and then also humble…in the sense of what God actually wants me to take on.

Just know…that we won’t do most of this…but at least when I have the option of a way to spend time…it helps me choose profitable– over TV time. :)

    If that makes any sense….?
I should have included this as my #4 in “proceeding thoughts.” I have a special friend, who I love, that I would overwhelm each year when I sent out “fun summer ideas” emails.
So my heart is sensitive to taking all that into account.

Though…I see from your blog that you’re so purposeful. Thank you for so faithfully reading and commenting. :)
    Love,
    K
(and this was a whole extra post :)

This is a fabulous post – thank you so much! Just clicked on it from GMG and I am so glad I did. :)
I have four boys – age 3,4,7,9 – and just started thinking about our summer plans yesterday. This will definitely be a help to me in being intentional about what we do. I love the examples too. We only have 60 days of summer holidays (June and July) but I have noticed since they started school that they are much more inquisitive and get ‘bored’ more easily and into mishief!! So I am planning to plan this summer better so we ALL have a great family time together. Tx

    Wow! You are so organised!

I am inspired to go off and write a list of things I want to achieve and do in the short and long term!

(I found your post through GMG!) I love this idea!!! I’m such a planning-list-making-give-me-an-itinerary person… Thanks for those questions to think through, and examples in your own life! I think I might work on something similar… I have a one-year-old daughter and a school-teacher husband who will be off this summer, so I really like the idea of being intentional with our summer planning! :)

Wow! You are organized! Thanks for sharing your insightful tips. DH and I decided a couple of weeks ago that we would be doing a family Bible study this summer. While we still haven’t selected our study, it was a relief to just make that decision. I think it will be one of our best summers! Happy iFellowship! ;o)

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/04009515524128741354 Anne-Marie

Great questions, Kara. I copy and pasted those into a Word Document so I can print them out and really spend time answering them. As far as the blank summer calendars go, Andrew has been printing those for years now. Honestly, he kind of takes over our social planning when he’s off from teaching…which makes it all the more challenging for me to be purposefu with the day-to-day stuff. I love what he plans, though…it’s just that we need EXTRA communication between the two of us so things will work out!

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/13182607074543277164 Kara

Carrie—if you have a second, see my friend Anne-Marie’s commnet. I was actually going to mention her to you because you both have the husbands off from teaching during the summer. Almost requires more intentional planning because as she wrote in her comment above…you have to coordinate multiple “planners” :)

I’m glad you linked up with Mustard Seed Planting at Mom’s Mustard Seeds today!

The one thing that stood out to me in your post is the word “intentional.” That word seems to be coming to my attention more often lately, so I need to take some time to pray and be more intentional in every area of my life, including my family’s summer activity planning! Thanks for a thought-provoking, helpful post!

I love plans! Especially ones that involve book lists:) The Sally Clarkson book you mentioned is great as is the DeMoss book(that one is great to do with a group of women) I’m in the middle of Bonhoeffer’s Cost if Discipleship–great book but takes a lot of thinking and processing. Enjoy your summer reading!

Intentional Summer

It’s almost June 1st !!!
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer…

Our family is in count down mode with only two weeks of school left.
And for me, that means it’s time to get serious about summer planning.

I am a natural born planner.

What a wonderful planning guide. I love the introduction. I love that you set it out and then showed examples. It is a wonderful post.

Just stumbled on your blog. I love this post. I’ve just been plAcing some purpose into my summer too and loved reading through your plans. We live in Oregon too and so it’s perfect to gather a few of your local ideas! Thank you! Will definitely be back to read more!

Thanks for the shout-out! Sounds like I’m not the only one thinking about being intentional this summer…I’ve seen several other posts this week addressing the same thing!

Wow! You are organized! Thanks for sharing your insightful tips. DH and I decided a couple of weeks ago that we would be doing a family Bible study this summer. While we still haven’t selected our study, it was a relief to just make that decision. I think it will be one of our best summers! Happy iFellowship! ;o)

Sara–I loved your local park tours post…inexpensive, active, outdoors… :)

WOW! I absolutely love this post and am so thankful you linked up with Mustard Seeds today! God has truly spoken to me through your words…..I’m already wrapped up in planning to start back in July….and yet, he’s been tapping me on the shoulder and whispering to me….but, I haven’t been ‘listening’……and now,I hear him clearly through you….he has other plans for me for the next few weeks. Thank You!!!! I LOVE your blog…and can’t wait to get to know you better!
